History / Log:

Wal Shirt was the foreman of the famous Halvorsen Boat-Building Yard in Sydney until his

retirement in 1956. Wall Shirt continued to build a number of boats for selected clients, 'Imara'

being one of the last boats that he built. The hull of 'Imara' is planked with Clear Candian

Oregon timber, a large perceentage of the planking is full length continous pieces. The

superstructure is solid teak. Wal Shirt was the last of the very tradional timber boat builders in

Australia, a true timber boat craftsman, as he did not use power tools.

'Imara' was refitted in 1996 by David Tripcony, third generation of the famous Tripcony boat-

building family based in Breakfast Creek Brisbane, since the 1920's. In 2010 'Imara' went back

in the shed @ Tripcony's and the antifoul was stripped back to bare timber. Skin fittings and

secocks were replaced and the hull reprimed and antifouled. The topsides were sanded back

and recoated with gloss white 2 pak. The decks were stripped and resheathed with A grade

marine ply and triaxial glassed with epoxy resin, then 2 pak painted with gloss white borders &

cream non-skid. The superstructure was sanded back, refastened and replugged with 12 coats of

werdol varnish applied. The flybridge was also sandered back & simarly to the decks was

recoated with gloss white 2 pak & cream non-skid.

'Imara' has cruised to the Whitsunday's twice and had two owners on Port Phillip Bay Victoria.

The current owner of twenty + years has cruised the Great Sandy Straits and Moreton Bay

extensively, participating in many wooden boat regattas. 'Imara' was featured on the cover of

the last Sanctuary Cove Wooden Boat & Car Concourse held. She recently participated in the

Tweed River Wooden Boat Regatta and the Grafton Wooden Boat Regatta held in conjunction

with the Jacaranda Festival on the Clarence River. 'Imara' then continued on a cruise down the

NSW coast to Sydney for the Christmas holidays.
